Carried in Our Hearts: The Gift of Adoption

Inspiring Stories of Families Created Across Continents

by: Dr. Jane Aronson

Carried in Our Hearts is a collection of short stories by adoptive families and their experiences with the process. The book goes from making the decision to adopt, to becoming a family, and touches on everything in between. It includes accounts about international and domestic adoptions. I would recommend this for every family seeking to adopt. Here are a few of my favorite stories:

CLAUDE KNOBLER

Claude discusses his decision to meet his adopted son’s biological mother when his family picked up their son in Africa. His account of this meeting and watching a mother say goodbye to her son for the last time is impossible to read without shedding tears. It can’t be done. You can read even more about their adoption journey here: https://www.jta.org/jewniverse/2015/adopting-a-child-and-letting-go-of-expectations

MARY-LOUISE PARKER

Mary-Louise Parker is an actress best known to me as Ruth in “Fried Green Tomatoes” but probably better known as Nancy Botwin in “Weeds.” Parker describes her and her son, William’s, first meeting with adopted daughter, Caroline, in an orphanage. This is a beautiful tale of love at first sight.

KRISTIN DAVIS

Kristin Davis played Charlotte York in “Sex in the City” who struggled with infertility and sought adoption on the show. In real life, it is unclear if she struggled with infertility (not that it’s any of our business) but she has adopted her two children. She reports on her decision to adopt her first child as a single parent and how glad she is that she took the leap of faith.
